Question:
We tell you that we love you for the sake of Allah the Exalted. Then, as for what follows: Is it permissible for a young man to speak with his fiancée on the telephone? And what are the limits of the relationship between a suitor and his fiancée? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
As for love for the sake of Allah, we say to the questioner: May Allah love you, for you loved us for His sake. Mutual love for the sake of Allah is among the best of the means of drawing near to Him, and it is obligatory for Muslims to love one another for the sake of Allah, men and women alike, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Ibn Hibban 64:248 He made them among the seven whom Allah will shade in His shade. And so it is with women; he used the example of the man, but the intended meaning includes women as well. If women love one another for the sake of Allah, or a man loves a woman for the sake of Allah, without any suspicion or corruption, but only love for the sake of Allah, they enter into this hadith.
The fifth:Sahih Muslim 1031a, and similarly, if a woman is invited by a man of status and beauty, and she says: I fear Allah.
The sixth:Sahih al-Bukhari 1423, and similarly, if a woman gives charity and conceals it so that her left hand does not know what her right hand spends, this is an example using the man; because the male gender is superior, otherwise the intended meaning is general, encompassing both men and women.
The seventh:Sahih al-Bukhari 660, meaning: he is alone, weeping out of fear of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. And similarly, if a woman remembers Allah while alone and her eyes overflow, the ruling is the same.
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 2566, and there are many hadiths on this matter.
As for the suitor, he is permitted to look at his fiancée, and he is permitted to speak with her regarding matters related to the benefit of the marriage, and there is nothing wrong with that. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the suitor to look at his fiancée to what would encourage him to marry her, and he said to some of the Ansar: He said: No. He said: , and he said in the hadith of al-Mughirah: , but his looking at her must be without seclusion, in the presence of her mother, or her father, or her brother, or others, without seclusion, and there is no harm in that. He looks at her face, her hand, her foot, her hair, and there is no harm. He speaks with her on the telephone, asking her about what is important to him regarding her religion, her knowledge, and other matters related to the marriage.
It is not permissible for him to arrange seclusion with her, or to invite her to corruption before the marriage. All of this is reprehensible. He only asks her about what is important for the marriage, and what is related to the marriage, or she asks him similarly about what is related to their marriage, and what causes love between them upon the completion of the marriage. As for asking and speaking between them about a matter in which corruption is feared, or seclusion, or meeting with her or taking her to such and such a place, or walking with her; this is reprehensible and not permissible.
