Question:
Our brother also says: The system and laws of certificates cause the neglect of much beneficial knowledge. There is no longer a competent, righteous teacher who raises the young with true upbringing. The student no longer cares about anything except obtaining the certificate, regardless of his religion, creed, jurisprudence, or character. To the point that some students, and even some teachers, do not know how to pray the funeral prayer. Most of them do not perform the five daily prayers, and if some of them do pray, they pray some of the prayers and leave off others.
The question is: What is the obligation of teachers toward themselves and their students? Because most students imitate their teachers and take from them much of what they are in terms of ignorance of the law of Allah, negligence in the worship of Allah, and customs and traditions that contradict the religion of Allah. The question is also: What is the obligation of students toward themselves, and what is the obligation of those in authority toward the students? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
The organization that has taken place among people for a long time has resulted in many benefits, such as encouraging students and motivating them to seek knowledge, and obtaining certificates that encourage them to seek knowledge and help them in their jobs and worldly interests. It has benefits and it has harms; because many students do not seek knowledge for the Hereafter, but rather for the world, its interests, benefits, and jobs. So it contains good and evil. Whoever seeks knowledge for Allah through the followed systems, and obtains certificates and uses them to obey Allah, and gains understanding in the religion, Allah will benefit the community through him, and these certificates will become a helper and provision for him in performing the task, in calling people to good, and in his being valued and his virtue being recognized. And whoever uses them for the world and forgets the Hereafter, his share will be from the world, and he will have no share in the Hereafter if he does not work for the Hereafter and strive for it.
In conclusion, these certificates that a student obtains and these organizations he follows benefit the sincere, righteous, and good person who seeks the Hereafter; they benefit him and help him. As for the one who does not seek the Hereafter, they only increase him in ruin and do not bring him any closer to Allah ; because he did not seek the Hereafter with them, but rather sought the world and its immediate gain. Some people may be granted success, learning for the world, and then Allah guides them to learn for the Hereafter, and they benefit, as some of the Salaf said: “We sought knowledge for other than Allah, but He refused to be for anything but Him.”
So it is obligatory for teachers to fear Allah, and to adhere to Islam, the morals of Islam, and the deeds of Islam, so that they become a role model for the students. Especially those who teach the Islamic sciences, for it is obligatory for him to be the closest of people to good, the most complete in good, the quickest of people to obey Allah and His Messenger, and the farthest of people from disobeying Allah and His Messenger, so that his students imitate him and follow his example in good.
And it is obligatory for the professor also to be eager to teach the students jurisprudence, encourage them to good, and motivate them to it. He should urge them to obey Allah and His Messenger, and warn them against disobeying Allah and His Messenger. He should urge them to imitate the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), his noble Companions, and the people of good, and warn them against imitating the people of evil. He urges them with his tongue and urges them with his action. He is a good role model in his action, and at the same time he motivates and urges them with his tongue. He combines the two: verbal encouragement and practical encouragement. They see in his actions and conduct what pleases them and helps them to obey Allah and His Messenger. And they hear from him, in the lesson and outside the lesson, good speech and sound guidance, enjoining good and forbidding evil, which pleases them and helps them to obey Allah and His Messenger. This is the obligation of everyone.
And the student must fear Allah. He must fear Allah and not let his concern be... and not let his concern be the certificate. Rather, he must fear Allah so that he uses the certificate to help him obey Allah and His Messenger, and so that he uses the certificate to benefit the servants by guiding them to good, commanding them to do what is right, forbidding them from what is wrong, teaching their ignorant ones, and guiding their lost ones, among other things. Let the certificate not be a means only for the world. No, rather he must use it in matters of religion and world. He uses it to help him obey Allah, and he benefits from it in the job for which he is employed, so that he benefits in his worldly life and his Hereafter.
So these educational institutions, from institutes, schools, and universities, were established for knowledge in the lands of the Muslims, and to teach people and guide people to good. So those in charge of them must give sincere advice to Allah and His servants, and strive to guide people to good and direct them to it. And the student must fear Allah and strive to seek beneficial knowledge, and strive also to ask the people of knowledge and benefit from their opinions. He must be humble, seeking knowledge, seeking understanding in the religion. And he must act upon his knowledge in his words and his actions. He must act, so that the effects of knowledge are known in his fear of Allah, in his carrying out the command of Allah, in his maintaining obedience to Allah, in his dutifulness to his parents, in his maintaining ties with his relatives, in his honoring his neighbor, and in other deeds of good. Especially prayer, in maintaining it, hastening to it in congregation, and being humble in it. This is how the righteous, diligent student is.
And the teacher must care for the students and guide them, and be a good role model for them in all good, as mentioned before. And we ask Allah for guidance and success for everyone.
