Question:
This questioner says: Your Eminence, what is the role of the teacher? What is his mission toward these large numbers of students? What happens if he is negligent? Is the obligation specific to the professor, or is the responsibility on everyone?
Answer:
There is no doubt that the role of the teacher toward the students and toward the Muslims is a great one, and his obligation is significant; for he was sought out, appointed, and tasked to guide the students to good, to guide them to beneficial knowledge and righteous deeds, to make clear to them what they should adopt, and to direct them to the path in seeking knowledge, and to suffice with the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). He should also encourage them to cooperate among themselves and benefit from one another. So his obligation is great. He should advise them and convey information to them in the manner he deems suitable for them, so that they may understand and comprehend it.
So he must strive to convey information to their hearts by the means he deems suitable: through complete clarification, complete advice, alerting them to what they may overlook, advising them to cooperate and study together, caring for the lessons, and preserving time, among other things he deems suitable; so that they may increase in knowledge, so that they may be discerning, and so that their knowledge may be more complete due to what he directed them to and guided them to in their acquisition, in their understanding, in preserving their time, and in acting in accordance with what they are directed to. And Allah will question him about that.
He seeks to perform the trust in the manner he deems most suitable, most beneficial, and most useful for them... He is to be thanked for his patience and striving, and he has two rewards if he is correct, and one reward if he errs, provided he exerted his utmost effort and strove to convey the sciences to them, to make them discerning, to prepare the lesson, and to be alert to what may be hidden from them so that they may be directed to it and guided to it. And success is from Allah.
