Question:
From the Arab Republic of Egypt, the listener (E. S. S. E.) has a case in which he says: I am a married man, and praise be to Allah, I work abroad, and the presence of my wife with me is necessary by religious law. However, I leave my mother alone, knowing that I am her sole provider. She is under the care of my married sister, but I do not travel without her consent. She wishes that I stay with her and cancel my trip, because my travel pains her, although the presence of my wife with her alleviates her pain. Should I stay with her and cancel my trip permanently? Or should I leave my wife with her, and is there no blame on me for my mother’s distress? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
This requires detailed consideration: If you can work in the place where your mother is, and you can comfort her and make her happy, that is preferable, because attending to her feelings is among the most important matters and among the best acts of devotion.
As for if you are compelled to travel to seek a livelihood, and there is no means in your country that helps you with your need and makes you independent of traveling, then you are excused in this. Allah says: [Al-Taghabun: 16].
And if it does not harm you to leave your wife with your mother, then leave her with her to comfort her and provide her with companionship. But if there is danger for you and you fear for yourself, then you travel with your wife and ask the mother for permission. If she permits, praise be to Allah. If she does not permit, this is a matter for consideration, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Abi Dawud 2625Sahih (Al-Albani).
And you may suffer great harm in remaining without a wife in a foreign land. The closest view, and Allah knows best, is that it is permissible for you to travel with her, even if the mother is not pleased, due to necessity and the intensity of your need for her with you, in order to protect your chastity, your safety, and her safety as well.
But as much as possible, seek the mother’s permission and strive to make her pleased with you; that is preferable and more complete. May Allah make your affairs easy and fulfill your need.
The presenter: Amen, may Allah reward you with good.
