The ruling on breastfeeding if it is unknown or doubtful

Question:
Our sister also has a final case we are presenting in this episode. She says: My grandmother nursed one of my relatives from my mother’s side, but she does not know the number of breastfeedings. I am now engaged to the brother of the man my grandmother nursed along with my father. I was told that this man and my father are brothers, and that he has become my uncle. I am engaged to his brother, and I doubt that even the one I am engaged to might be my uncle. Please clarify the path for me?

Answer:
The original state is safety, and the original state is permissibility. As long as it is not known that he was breastfed by your grandmother, and it is not known that he is your uncle, the original state is permissibility and safety, and praise be to Allah. If the grandmother does not remember the number of breastfeedings, no ruling is established based on that. It is necessary to have five known breastfeedings or more. If the nursing mother does not remember the number of breastfeedings and does not know whether it was five, four, or three, her breastfeeding is not relied upon and is not considered valid. As long as the breastfeeding was not for this suitor, and this suitor only doubts that he may have been breastfed, this is not relied upon.
