The Number of Breastfeedings That Establish Prohibition
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The fifth question of Fatwa No. ( 6360 )
Q 5: What is the number of breastfeedings required for the infant to become the son of the nursing woman? What is the relationship of the daughters of the woman who nursed my son, who are considered my siblings through breastfeeding, to me as their mother?
A 5: The breastfeeding that establishes prohibition must be five distinct breastfeedings or more, provided the infant is within the first two years of life. A breastfeed is defined as the child holding the breast and sucking milk that reaches
his stomach and then releasing it; this constitutes one breastfeed. If he returns and breastfeeds again in the same manner, it is a second breastfeed, and so on, until the five or more are completed, whether in one sitting or multiple sittings. By this, the children of the nursing woman become your son’s siblings through breastfeeding, whether they are male or female. As for their relationship to you, they are strangers to you and are not mahram (relatives one may not marry) to you. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
