Exegesis of the Verse on Seeking Permission in Surat al-Nur

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
From the listener: Halimi Abu Samara, with a message asking about the exegesis of the verse on seeking permission in Surat al-Nur. May Allah reward you with good, and may He do you good.

Answer:
The verse in al-Nur, the verse on seeking permission, is clear. Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) says:
O you who have believed, let those whom your right hands possess and those who have not [yet] reached puberty among you ask permission of you [before entering] at three times: before the dawn prayer and when you put aside your clothing [for rest] at noon and after the night prayer. [These are] three times of privacy for you. There is no blame upon you nor upon them beyond these [periods], for they continually circulate among you - some of you, among othersيَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لِيَسْتَأْذِنْكُمُ الَّذِينَ مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُكُمْ وَالَّذِينَ لَمْ يَبْلُغُوا الْحُلُمَ مِنْكُمْ ثَلاثَ مَرَّاتٍ مِنْ قَبْلِ صَلاةِ الْفَجْرِ وَحِينَ تَضَعُونَ ثِيَابَكُمْ مِنَ الظَّهِيرَةِ وَمِنْ بَعْدِ صَلاةِ الْعِشَاءِ ثَلاثُ عَوْرَاتٍ لَكُمْ لَيْسَ عَلَيْكُمْ وَلا عَلَيْهِمْ جُنَاحٌ بَعْدَهُنَّ طَوَّافُونَ عَلَيْكُمْ بَعْضُكُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ
[al-Nur: 58].
So, if a believer has a slave woman in his possession, he must seek permission before entering upon her; because she may be in a state, or in a condition, that they do not approve of, or that they do not wish to be seen in. He seeks permission from them at these times, and likewise his household members; he seeks permission from them at the three times that Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) specified in this noble verse, so that he does not see them in a state that is not appropriate.
before the Fajr prayerمِنْ قَبْلِ صَلاةِ الْفَجْرِ
[al-Nur: 58] means: the end of the night.
when you put aside your clothing [for rest] at noonوَحِينَ تَضَعُونَ ثِيَابَكُمْ مِنَ الظَّهِيرَةِ
[al-Nur: 58] means: the midday nap.
and after the 'Isha' prayerوَمِنْ بَعْدِ صَلاةِ الْعِشَاءِ
[al-Nur: 58]. Meaning, in these times, the household members may be lax in not being concerned about covering their private parts; the slave woman may be in an inappropriate state, and some of it may be exposed.
The point is that in these conditions, the household members may be lax at midday, before the Fajr prayer, and after the 'Isha' prayer.
In all these times, a person is alone with himself, so he should seek permission when entering upon them, whether it is a slave woman, or a boy who has not reached puberty. And even if it is a boy, because they may not be pleased for him to see something of their state in these three times.
So, the servant, whether he is a slave as the verse explicitly states, or not a slave, is even more so. And likewise, a boy who has not reached puberty must seek permission in these three times, and a non-boy is even more so; an adult is even more so.
The purpose of this is to guard against seeing the household members in an inappropriate state. If he seeks permission, they prepare and strive to be in a good state. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
