Question:
At the beginning of this episode, we return to a message sent to the program from Ta'if, from the listener Muhammad Ahmad Ibrahim al-'Azimi. Our brother Muhammad raised some of his questions in a previous episode, and he has some remaining questions in this episode. His first question in this episode is about the exegesis of a verse from the Book of Allah, which is the saying of the Truth—Blessed and Exalted is He—I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan:
O you who have believed, let those whom your right hands possess and those who have not [yet] reached puberty among you ask permission of you [before entering] at three times: before the dawn prayer and when you put aside your clothing [for rest] at noon and after the night prayer. [These are] three times of privacy for you. There is no blame upon you nor upon them beyond these [periods], for they continually circulate among you - some of you, among others. Thus does Allah make clear to you the verses; and Allah is Knowing and Wise.
[Al-Nur: 58]?

Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. As for what follows:
The verse is clear in its meaning. The slaves, and likewise the children who have not reached puberty—meaning, those who have not reached the age of fifteen, and have not experienced any other sign of maturity, such as the growth of pubic hair or wet dreams—these people must ask permission from their household members during these three times. These are times of exposure, before the Fajr prayer, because when people are alone with one another, some of their private matters may be revealed, so they must ask permission to enter.
Likewise, the time of midday, before Dhuhr, and if their custom is to rest after Dhuhr, then that as well. This is because the custom of people in the past was to take a nap before Dhuhr.
Likewise, after the 'Isha' prayer. In these three times, they must ask permission. As for other times, there is no need, because they are constantly moving about among them, being members of the household; so there is no blame after that.
The point is: that in these three times, they must ask permission, even if they are a slave, or a child who has not reached puberty, so that they do not see an exposed part of the body. As for other times, the matter is broad, yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh: Yes.

The presenter: Your Eminence, are the customs of people taken into account, and do their circumstances change from one time to another?

The Shaykh: Yes, the operative cause is understood. If the time of exposure becomes another time, such as after Dhuhr instead of the nap, or after the Fajr prayer instead of before Fajr, then they must ask permission in that case as well.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh: Yes.

The presenter: Are the domestic servants in the house included in this ruling?

The Shaykh: Yes, the servants are like the slaves.

The presenter: Like the slaves.

The Shaykh: If they are coming and going for the needs of the house.

The presenter: Yes.

The Shaykh: Like the slaves, yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. So, they must be taught these etiquettes.

The Shaykh: Yes, they must ask permission as Allah has commanded, yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
