The Ruling on Treating Illness with Cauterization

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Our brother asks and says: Is it permissible for a person to undergo cauterization if he falls ill?

Answer:
Yes, yes, cauterization is permissible, but if another remedy is available, that is better. Cauterization should be the last resort in medicine. If he can find another remedy without cauterization, such as pills, injections, applying oil or something similar, or by reciting over him—where some righteous person recites over him and blows on him—all of that is good. And if he needs cauterization, there is no harm. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Healing is in three things: cauterization with fire, a cut with a cupping vessel, or a drink of honey. And I do not like to be cauterized.الشفاء في ثلاث: كية نار، أو شرطة محجم، أو شربة عسل، وما أحب أن أكتوي
Al-Bukhari narrated it in his Sahih, and in another narration:
But I forbid my followers to use (cauterization) branding with fire.وإني أنهى أمتي عن الكي
Sahih al-Bukhari 5680
.
Therefore, cauterization should be the last option; because it is a type of torture, a type of fire, so it should not be resorted to except out of necessity. If he needs it, he should undergo cauterization. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cauterized some of his Companions. If he needs cauterization, there is no harm. Khubayb ibn al-Urat, the noble Companion, was cauterized for some illness. So cauterization is permissible when there is a need for it, but leaving it is better if something else is available.
