Question:
The first message in this episode is from one of our female listeners. At the end of her message, she says: Your sister in Allah (S. A. A. G.) from the State of Kuwait. Our sister has a collection of questions, and she says: When I recite the Qur'an, I am in a state of complete wudu' and I am sitting. However, sometimes I go to bed when I feel tired from sitting, and I recite while lying on my back in bed. Is there any sin on me for doing this? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family, and his Companions, and whoever follows his guidance. As for what follows:
There is no obstacle to reciting the Qur'an while standing, sitting, or lying down, as Allah the Exalted said in His Noble Book: [Al Imran: 191]. Reciting the Qur'an falls under the category of dhikr, as it is the greatest of dhikr.
Wudu' for reciting the Qur'an is a recommended practice, not an obligation. It is permissible for one who is not in a state of wudu' to recite the Qur'an from memory, except if he is in a state of janabah, in which case he does not recite until he performs ghusl. There is no obstacle to reciting the Qur'an while sitting, standing, lying on one's side, or lying on one's back. Likewise, there is nothing wrong with reciting it while walking; there is no blame in any of this.
He is not permitted to recite from the mushaf except in a state of purity. He is not permitted to read from the mushaf unless he is in a state of purity, based on what is established in the hadith of 'Amr ibn Hazm (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he wrote to the people of Yemen:Muwatta Malik 15:1 This is like a consensus among the scholars that purity is necessary for one who wishes to recite the Qur'an from the mushaf—specifically, minor purity. As for the one in a state of janabah, he does not recite at all, neither from the mushaf nor from memory, until he performs ghusl.
As for the menstruating woman, the scholars differed on whether she recites or not.
Some scholars equated her with the one in a state of janabah and said: She is not permitted to recite until she performs ghusl, because her state of impurity is major and requires ghusl, meaning: after purity. A group of other scholars said: There is no blame on her for reciting from memory, because her state of impurity is not like that of janabah, as her period lasts a long time. The same applies to the woman with post-natal bleeding. It is not permissible to analogize them to the one in a state of janabah. This is the correct position: she is permitted to recite from memory because she is not like the one in a state of janabah due to the length of the duration. She is permitted to touch the Qur'an from behind a barrier when necessary, such as wearing gloves, to review a verse or the like. May Allah guide them all.
The presenter: O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you with good.
