The questioner : I heard from one of the sisters that the Prayer of Tasbih and the Prayer of Need are religious innovations with no basis, so what is your esteemed opinion on this?

The Shaykh : We see that the Prayer of Tasbih and the Prayer of Need are not a recommended practice, and that the hadith regarding them is very weak and not acted upon. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said about the Prayer of Tasbih: "Its hadith is invalid", and he said: "None of the Imams recommended it". Accordingly, a person should not occupy himself with something whose prescribed nature has not been established, but should occupy himself with what is prescribed and clear.
I say that all weak hadiths in establishing a Sunnah from the Sunnahs are not permissible to act upon, because one of the conditions of acts of worship is that they be prescribed. If the hadith is weak, the prescribed nature is not established. Therefore, no weak hadith regarding the prescribed nature of any of the Sunnahs is acted upon, whether in prayer, zakah, Hajj, or fasting.
