Ruling on seeking divorce due to bad character and conduct

Question:
A woman married her husband, and after the marriage she discovered that he was married to another woman, and he had not informed her before the marriage. He also sometimes curses and insults her, and treats her with bad character. Is it permissible for this woman to seek divorce from her husband?

Answer:
She knows her own situation best; if she is suffering clear harm, she may seek divorce, but if she is not suffering clear harm, she should not seek divorce. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: , so she has no right to ask for it except for a cause of hatred or harm, such as a man who beats women, or if Allah has placed love between them; then she seeks divorce.
As for the mere fact that he has a wife, that is lawful for him; he may marry a second, third, or fourth wife, unless it was stipulated that he not marry a second wife, in which case she has her condition. But if it was not stipulated, he may marry two, three, or four.
