The ruling on a salary from an interest-based bank

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What do you say about a person who works in one of the banks and receives a salary? Is this salary lawful or forbidden? And if you say that it is forbidden because banks are interest-based, and this person has no other job at the moment, should he leave his job or continue until he finds another job? Please give us a ruling, may Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
We and the Permanent Committee have issued multiple rulings prohibiting this, stating that it is not permissible to remain in banks, and that it is not lawful for him to work in them; because it is assisting them in sin and transgression. Allah the Exalted says:
And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.وَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَى وَلَا تَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ
[Al-Ma'idah: 2], and the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) cursed the accepter of interest and its payer, and one who records it, and the two witnessesلعن الله آكل الربا، وموكله، وكاتبه، وشاهديه
Sahih Muslim 1598
, and he said:
They are all the same.هم سواء
.
Therefore, working in banks is not permissible; because it is assisting them in the forbidden. Even if he does not find a job:
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way outوَمَنْ يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ مَخْرَجًا
[Al-Talaq: 2]. He should separate himself and hasten, even if he does not find work. He should seek work after separating, and Allah the Exalted says:
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out (3) And will provide for him from where he does not expect.وَمَنْ يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ مَخْرَجًا ۝ وَيَرْزُقْهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَحْتَسِبُ
[Al-Talaq: 2-3],
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him of his matter ease.وَمَنْ يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ يُسْرًا
[Al-Talaq: 4]. Sustenance is not tied to the forbidden; sustenance is facilitated through the lawful. So he should fear Allah and stay away from the forbidden, and Allah the Exalted will make his affairs easy for him if he is sincere in his repentance.
