Ruling on Shaving the Beard, Trimming It, or Leveling It

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Your Eminence, please inform us—may Allah reward you with good—about the ruling on shaving beards, trimming them, and leveling them?

Answer:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Trim your mustaches, let your beards grow, and differ from the polytheistsقصُّوا الشوارب، وأعفوا اللِّحَى، خالفوا المشركين
It is agreed upon that it is authentic.
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Trim the mustaches, let the beards grow, and differ from the polytheists.قصُّوا الشوارب، ووفروا اللِّحَى، خالفوا المشركين
,
Trim closely the moustache, and grow beard, and thus act against the fire-worshippers.جزُّوا الشوارب، وأرخوا اللِّحَى، خالفوا المجوس
Sahih Muslim 260
.
Therefore, it is obligatory to let it grow, let it hang down, keep it full, and not cut it or shave it. One should keep it full and let it hang down; in obedience to Allah and His Messenger, and to avoid imitating the disbelievers and women.
One should not be deceived by the people today and the large number of those who shave or trim; one should not be deceived by this. Imitation should be of the people of good, not the people of evil. Imitation should be of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the righteous. As for imitating those who commit sin, no. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says:
There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent patternلَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ
[Al-Ahzab: 21], and He, Mighty and Majestic, says:
And the first forerunners [in the faith] among the Muhajireen and the Ansar and those who followed them with good conductوَالسَّابِقُونَ الْأَوَّلُونَ مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَالْأَنْصَارِ وَالَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُمْ بِإِحْسَانٍ
[Al-Tawbah: 100] "Follow them with excellence": proceed in their path in speech and action.
So the believer trims the mustache and shaves it, and lets the beard grow and leaves it uncut. This is the obligatory act that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did, and the Companions did, and to which he (peace and blessings be upon him) guided the Ummah.
