Question:
My father passed away to the mercy of Allah, leaving behind my mother, who is an elderly woman. She has children in Riyadh and elsewhere. She is currently in her waiting period and wants to visit them, or visit others. What is the ruling on this?
Answer:
The widow whose husband has died must stay in her home and not go out; because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1204Sahih (Darussalam) This widow must stay in her home, and she must not wear beautiful clothes, nor use perfume, nor apply kohl, nor wear jewelry. There are five matters regarding the widow that you should observe:
The first: Staying in the home until the waiting period ends.
The second one.: Not wearing beautiful clothes, but she may wear clothes that are not beautiful, such as black, red, green, and blue, as long as they are not beautiful.
The third.: Not wearing jewelry, such as gold, silver, diamonds, pearls, and the like. She must not wear jewelry or a watch, as these are adornments and beauty. It should be in her pocket, or in another place where she can benefit from it.
The fourth: Not applying kohl. She must not apply kohl, nor put on her face any of the adornments that women are accustomed to using today, other than water and soap.
The fifth: Perfume.
All of these are five matters: leaving off perfume, leaving off jewelry, leaving off beautiful clothes... But if there is a need, such as a doctor, and necessity calls for going out to the doctor for medicine, there is no harm. Or if she has no one to serve her, she may go out for her needs from the market, to bring food, or to bring vegetables, if she has no one to attend to her needs, there is no harm in her going out. But as for visiting her children, she does not go out for that.
