The Ruling on Singing and What Follows from Listening to It
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
In previous issues, the ruling on singing and the disagreement among scholars regarding it were explained, along with their agreement on the prohibition of listening that leads to fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) and the permissibility of singing at celebrations and festivals. As for everything else, there are two opinions, and the stronger position is that it is permissible, provided there is no professionalism or association of partners with Allah, and avoiding anything that incites in the poetry, the voice, or the melody?
Answer: As for singing, there is no doubt that it is forbidden, and there is no doubt that it is what is wrong. It is one of the means of corrupting hearts and making them sick. Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said: : [Luqman: 6]. Most of the scholars of knowledge, including exegetes and others, said that this refers to singing. Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) used to swear an oath to that , and he would say: .
So, singing is forbidden, and it is a means of corrupting hearts and making them sick, except for what is done at weddings and celebrations. This is permissible, indeed recommended for women specifically, without the mixing of men, at weddings. The women used to do this in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and it is part of announcing the marriage. So, singing among women, ordinary singing among them praising the husband and the husband's family, the wife and her family, and the like, this is something with no harm in weddings. Likewise, the singing of the maids at festivals by themselves, all of this is with no harm.
As for the songs that exist now on the radio, on television, and in many of the recordings, they are all prohibited, and it is obligatory to prohibit them; because they incite evil, call to corruption, and make hearts sick. There arises from them an incitement to evils and lewdnesses whose measure is known only to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He).
The texts indicating the prohibition of that and warning against it have come. Every believer and every believing woman should be cautious of that, and not be deceived by such a fatwa (a scholarly legal ruling) and its like, which leads to corruption and causes one to fall into types of invalidity. We ask Allah to forgive us and its speaker, and to rectify the condition of everyone. Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the Near.
