The Ruling on One Who Curses the Religion

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
What is the ruling in Islam regarding a Muslim man who curses the religion?
Answer: Cursing the religion is among the greatest of major sins and among the nullifiers of Islam. We ask Allah for well-being and safety. Whoever curses his religion, meaning Islam, or curses the Prophet of Islam, or curses any of the messengers, has apostatized from Islam; we seek refuge in Allah. If he curses the Messenger or curses Islam, or curses Islam in any form of cursing, such as saying, "Islam is a stagnant religion," or "an incomplete religion," or "the opium of the peoples," or similar disparagements, then this is called cursing, and its perpetrator is an apostate from Islam. He is to be given the opportunity to repent; if he repents, well and good, otherwise he is to be killed. Some scholars held the view that he is not given the opportunity to repent but is killed outright, just as one who curses Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is killed.
The point is that cursing Allah, or His Messenger, or His religion is apostasy from Islam. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever changes his religion, execute him.من بدل دينه فاقتلوه
Sunan Ibn Majah 2535Sahih (Darussalam)
Therefore, it is obligatory for the one who does this to hasten to repent, return to Allah, turn to Him in repentance, feel remorse for what he has done, and do much good work, so that perhaps Allah will accept his repentance.
As for the rulers, it is obligatory for them to give him the opportunity to repent, discipline him for what he did, reprimand him for it, and discipline him in a way that deters him and others like him from such acts. As for accepting his repentance, this is a matter of consideration and disagreement among scholars. Whoever holds that his repentance should be accepted has a valid position, and whoever holds that he should be killed and his repentance not accepted has a valid position; this is to deter people from being lax in this matter, to protect the religion of Allah, to protect the sanctity of Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He), and to protect the sanctity of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). In any case, cursing is apostasy from Islam. As for whether his repentance is accepted according to the apparent ruling or not, this is a matter of disagreement among scholars. As for what is between him and Allah, His repentance is accepted if he is sincere in his repentance, returns to Allah, turns to Him, and feels remorse for what he has done in the past; for Allah accepts it from him due to the generality of the evidence indicating the acceptance of repentance. He is the One who accepts repentance from His servants, and He is the One who said (Exalted and Majestic is He):
And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.وَتُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا أَيُّهَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ
[An-Nur: 31]. Repentance has a great status. If the servant does it sincerely, with remorse, turning away from what he did of sin, whether great or small, and remains steadfast upon it, then Allah accepts it from Him (Glorified and Exalted is He). But will the ruler in this world accept it and not kill him? This is the point of disagreement. Whoever holds that the repentance of the one who curses is not accepted says: Because cursing is a great matter, and because accepting it may embolden people to be lax in it. For this reason, a group of scholars held that he is to be killed and his repentance is not accepted from the perspective of the ruling, to cut off the source of this evil, to protect the religion of Allah, to protect His Messenger, and to protect His sanctity (Glorified and Exalted is He) from the cursing of those who curse, the abuse of those who abuse, and the mockery of those who mock. Allah is the One to be sought for help, and there is no power or strength except with Allah. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. Your Eminence, the Shaykh, must also have a word for the people in general so that they do not fall into such a major sin?
The Shaykh: Yes. Cursing the religion occurs among many of the foolish. It is obligatory for all Muslims to beware of it, and to guard their tongues from what pertains to cursing the religion, or cursing Allah, or cursing His Messenger, or cursing Paradise, or anything else that Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) has legislated. Likewise, mockery is not permissible. It is not permissible to mock the legislation of Allah, or Paradise, or the Fire, or Allah, or His Messenger, or anything that Allah has legislated, or the beard, or anything else that Allah has legislated.
A person must guard his tongue, and a woman must guard her tongue, from everything that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has forbidden, such as cursing, abuse, or mockery. Allah said: :
Say, "Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?"قُلْ أَبِاللَّهِ وَآيَاتِهِ وَرَسُولِهِ كُنتُمْ تَسْتَهْزِئُونَ
[At-Tawbah: 65]
Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after your belief.لا تَعْتَذِرُوا قَدْ كَفَرْتُمْ بَعْدَ إِيمَانِكُمْ
[At-Tawbah: 66].
When it was reported to him (peace and blessings be upon him) that a man had killed his slave girl because she used to curse the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he killed her after she refused to repent when he gave her the opportunity to repent, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I bear witness that her blood is permissible.ألا اشهدوا إن دمها هدر
Sunan an-Nasa'i 4070Sahih (Darussalam)
because she had cursed the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).
The point is that it is obligatory for the people of Islam, men and women, to beware of this matter, this great crime, and for people to beware of it, and to guard their tongues from cursing Allah and His Messenger, or mocking Allah and His Messenger, or mocking His legislation, or what He has informed about the Hereafter. It is obligatory for the people of Islam to guard their tongues and preserve them from everything pertaining to cursing, abuse, and mockery. May Allah grant everyone well-being and safety.
