The Ruling on One Who Insults the Religion and the Ruling on His Repentance
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
He also asks, and the brother Abkar Jum'ah says: A person is ignorant of the matter of the religion and insults the religion. What is his ruling? And what must he do if he realizes his mistake? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
Answer: Insulting the religion is major shirk (associating partners with Allah) and apostasy from Islam, we seek refuge in Allah. If one insults the religion, if a Muslim insults his religion, insults Islam, or disparages Islam and criticizes it, then this is apostasy from Islam. Or if he mocks it. Allah the Exalted and Majestic said: [Surah al-Tawbah: 65-66].
The scholars have unanimously agreed that if a Muslim insults the religion or belittles it, or insults the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) or belittles him, or mocks him, he becomes an apostate, a disbeliever whose blood and wealth are lawful. He is to be given the opportunity to repent; if he repents, well and good, but if he does not, he is to be killed. Some scholars say that there is no repentance for him in terms of the ruling, and that he must be killed, but the stronger view, if Allah wills, is that whenever he displays repentance, declares his repentance, and returns to his Lord , it is accepted. And if the one in authority kills him as a deterrent to others, there is nothing wrong with that.
As for his repentance between him and Allah, it is valid if he repents sincerely. So his repentance between him and Allah is valid, even if the one in authority kills him, in order to block the door to laxity regarding the religion and insulting the religion. The point is that insulting the religion, disparaging the religion or the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), or mocking it is apostasy and major shirk (associating partners with Allah) by the consensus of the Muslims. The one who does it is to be given the opportunity to repent; if he repents, Allah accepts his repentance and forgives him. As for whether he is accepted in this world or not, this is a matter of disagreement among the scholars. If the Imam accepts him and forgives him due to his sincere repentance, his display of regret, and his abandonment of the sin, there is no harm. And if the one in authority kills him to block the door to laxity regarding this great matter, because insulting the religion and insulting the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is a serious matter, then if the one in authority kills him for insulting the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) or insulting the religion, this has its basis. It is a great statement and a good statement from the scholars, as a deterrent for people from being lax in insulting the religion or insulting the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Yes.

(65) And if you ask them, they will surely say, "We were only conversing and playing." Say, "Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?" (66) Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after your belief. If We pardon one faction of you - We will punish another faction because they were criminals.
