Causes of a daughter's hatred for her mother and the remedy for it

Shaykh Abdulaziz! The first message in this episode is from one of our sisters, Fadwa. Our sister Fadwa asks a set of questions. In her first question, she says: A girl hates her mother intensely, and the mother does not know about it. This girl lived away from her mother with her father and did not see her until she was older due to the mother's divorce under family circumstances. It is known that she gives gifts to her mother. She asked some scholars, and they said: The inclination of the heart is not something for which the Lord holds one accountable. What is your opinion, and she seeks guidance; because she fears that this may be undutifulness to parents. Does the divorce have an effect on the state in which that girl is living?
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
As for what follows: There is no doubt that hearts are in the hand of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), and He directs them as He wills, Glorified and Exalted is He. So love in the heart and hatred are matters in the hand of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), but they have causes. If the mother is affectionate toward her daughter and cares for her affairs, this is one of the causes of love. And if the mother is not so, but rather has a turning away from the daughter and a lack of concern for her, or if her absence from her is prolonged, as with the questioner, then this may cause some hatred and estrangement.
It is obligatory for you, O daughter, to fear Allah in this matter, and to strive to maintain ties with her, to be kind to her, to be dutiful to her, and to speak kindly to her in all circumstances. And you should ask your Lord to expand your chest for loving her; because the right of the mother is great, and being dutiful to her is among the most important obligations. If you are not able to do that, the matter is in the hand of Allah, and it does not harm you, for the affairs of the hearts are in the hand of Allah, and He is the One who turns them as He wills, Glorified and Exalted is He. For this reason, it was among the supplication of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): So the hearts are in the hand of Allah, and He is the One who turns them, Glorified and Exalted is He. So you should supplicate humbly to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and ask Him to expand your chest for loving her and fulfilling her right and being dutiful to her as Allah has prescribed. And you must do what you are able of kindness and maintaining ties, such as gifts and other things that cause the fulfillment of the obligation and result in the mother's satisfaction and her love for you. As for you, you are only responsible for what you are able to do [Al-Taghabun:16] .. [Al-Baqarah:286]. It is not obligatory for you to give money or gifts that you cannot afford, and nothing is obligatory for you in terms of financial maintenance if she is, praise be to Allah, self-sufficient. This is only from the aspect of affection, from the aspect of kindness, and from the aspect of seeking closeness. If you give her something and you are able to do so from good money, then all of this is good. We ask Allah for success for you. Yes.
The presenter: Our sister attributes the cause, Your Eminence, to the fact that she was separated from her mother due to the divorce.
The Shaykh: This may be the cause, or there may be other causes. But how many daughters are there who are distant from their mother yet long for her, even if they are far away? They long for her and strive to meet her, but matters are in the hand of Allah. There may be other causes, such as the mother not writing to her, or not asking about her, or not sending her greetings, or similar types of estrangement. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you.
