The Ruling on Telephone Conversations Between the Prospective Husband and the Prospective Wife

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Our sister is also asking about various issues. In the first issue, she asks: What is the ruling on telephone conversations between the prospective husband and the prospective wife? The intention, as they say, is to get to know each other before committing to marriage. If they are fasting, does the ruling change? This is common in our Muslim society, and the calls are innocent in appearance and according to their words. This question stems from the desire to adhere to the teachings of our religion?
Answer: We do not know of any harm in conversation between the prospective husband and the prospective wife if it is innocent talk that does not lead to evil, but is intended only for getting to know her and for her to get to know him. There is nothing wrong with this. He asks about her condition, her work, her religion, and the like, and she asks him about the same, with the intention of being certain before proceeding to this marriage. There is no harm in this. However, if the intention is something else, such as enjoying each other's voices or making appointments that may lead to fornication, then this is not permissible. It is obligatory for the prospective husband and the prospective wife to seek only what is necessary in their conversation for the purpose of getting to know each other. As for what is feared to lead to fitnah (trial, discord or temptation), it is obligatory to avoid it.
The presenter: May Allah reward you.
