The Ruling on Suicide Due to Financial Hardship
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The third question in the letter of the brother (B. L. D.) from Iraq, Tarmiyah Governorate, states: If a person commits suicide due to his life circumstances, and the hardship he faces in making a living and providing for his family, does this mean that he will abide eternally in Hellfire? Please inform us, may Allah reward you?
Answer: Suicide is a great evil and one of the major sins. It is not permissible for a Muslim to commit suicide. Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) says: : [An-Nisa: 29]. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in the authentic hadith: Sunan Abi Dawud 3257Sahih (Al-Albani). Therefore, it is obligatory for the believer to be patient and endure if he is struck by a calamity or hardship in his worldly life. He should not hasten to kill himself, but rather he should guard against it, fear Allah, be patient, and take the necessary measures [At-Talaq: 2]. If he kills himself, he exposes himself to the anger and punishment of Allah, and he is under the will of Allah; because killing the soul is less than shirk (associating partners with Allah). And Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) says: [An-Nisa: 48]. So whatever is less than shirk is under the will of Allah. Killing the soul is less than shirk, and so is zina (unlawful sexual intercourse), and so is theft, and so is drinking intoxicants. They are all sins less than shirk. So the one who commits them is under the will of Allah. If he dies upon his sin, if Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) wills, He will forgive him for his good deeds and for the Islam that he possessed. And if He wills, He will punish him in the Fire according to the measure of his sins. Then, after he is purified and tested, he will be brought out of the Fire. And he will not abide eternally in the Fire according to the people of the Sunnah and the community. The sinner does not abide eternally in the Fire, neither the killer nor anyone else. He does not abide eternally in the Fire, but he is punished if Allah wills to punish him. He is punished in the Fire as long as Allah wills, according to the measure of his sins. Then Allah brings him out of the Fire to a river called the River of Life. They grow in it as a seed grows in the flood of a torrent. When their creation is complete, Allah admits them into Paradise by their Islam and their faith upon which they died. And only the disbelievers abide eternally in the Fire. Only the disbelievers abide eternally in the Fire: the mushrikin (those who associate partners with Allah) who disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger, or who lied about His messengers, or who denied what His messengers brought, or similar types of things that make one a disbeliever. As for the sinner, he does not abide eternally in the Fire according to the people of the Sunnah and the community, contrary to the Khawarij and the Mu'tazilah. Indeed, the group of Khawarij and the group of Mu'tazilah—and they are two lost groups—say that the sinner abides eternally in the Fire if he enters it. And this is a great error. As for the people of the Sunnah and the community, who are the followers of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and those who follow them with excellence, they say: The sinner does not abide eternally in the Fire if he did not consider the sin permissible, if he died knowing that it is a sin, but Satan drove him to it. So this person does not abide eternally, but he is under the will of Allah. If Allah wills, He will pardon him and admit him into Paradise by his Islam and his faith. And if He wills, He will punish him in the Fire according to the measure of his sins. Then, after purification and testing, Allah brings him out of the Fire into Paradise. The hadiths have been mass-transmitted from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding this: that some people enter the Fire by their sins, then Allah brings them out of the Fire by the intercession of the intercessors, or by His mercy (Exalted and Majestic is He) without the intercession of anyone. All of this is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Yes.
