The Status of Dreams and Visions That Occur During the Day

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The third and final question in the letter from our brother (A. A. A.) from Iraq reads: What is the ruling on dreams while awake, and is there sin in them? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
Answer: Dreams do not occur except in sleep; they do not occur while awake. What is called a vision or dream is only in sleep. If one sees it while awake, it is not called a dream; this is called witnessing, seeing, or hearing. Perhaps you mean dreams during the day, meaning not at night. We do not know of a difference between a dream at night or during the day. If a man is among the people of truthfulness in his waking state and in his conversations, the most likely outcome is that his visions are true. If he is a liar, the most likely outcome is that his visions are like his state while awake, and they are not to be relied upon. It is the Sunnah for the believer, if he sees something good, to praise Allah for it and tell those he loves about it. If he sees something bad, he should not tell anyone about it, and he should seek refuge in Allah from Satan and from the evil of what he saw when he wakes up. He should spit dryly to his left three times and say:
I seek refuge in Allah from Satan and from the evil of what I sawأعوذ بالله من الشيطان ومن شر ما رأيت
, three times. Then he should turn over to his other side, and it will not harm him, and he should not tell anyone about it. This is how the hadith came from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:
Whoever among you sees a vision he likes, let him praise Allah and tell those he loves about it. And whoever sees a vision he dislikes, it is from Satan, so let him spit dryly to his left, seek refuge in Allah from Satan and from the evil of what he saw, then turn over to his other side, for it will not harm him, and he should not tell anyone about itمن رأى منكم رؤيا يحبها فليحمد الله وليخبر بها من يحب، ومن رأى رؤيا يكرهها فهي من الشيطان فلينفث عن يساره وليتعوذ بالله من الشيطان ومن شر ما رأى، ثم لينقلب على جنبه الآخر فإنها لا تضره ولا يخبر بها أحداً
. In another wording, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
A good vision is from Allah, and a dream is from Satan. So if one of you sees something he dislikes, let him spit dryly to his left three times, seek refuge in Allah from Satan and from the evil of what he saw three times, then turn over to his other side, for it will not harm him, and he should not tell anyone about itالرؤيا الصالحة من الله والحلم من الشيطان، فإذا رأى أحدكم ما يكره فلينفث عن يساره ثلاث مرات، وليتعوذ بالله من الشيطان ومن شر ما رأى ثلاث مرات، ثم لينقلب على جنبه الآخر فإنها لا تضره ولا يخبر بها أحداً
. And Allah knows best.
