The Miswak and the Ruling on Using It During the Friday Sermon
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first message in this episode, may the Shaykh be respected, is a message sent to the program from our brother Kheiry Ahmad Kheiry al-Nasri, apparently from Riyadh. Our brother is asking a set of questions, among which is a question that says: We see some people using the miswak inside the mosque, during the sermon, and before it, even though some people are disgusted by it. What is your opinion regarding such people, and is it permissible to use the miswak during the sermon? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
As for what follows: Using the miswak is among the recommended practices (sunnah) that the Chosen One (peace and blessings be upon him) performed and encouraged. It is authentically reported from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: “Were it not thatSunan Abi Dawud 47Sahih (Al-Albani),” and in the other wording: “Bulugh al-Maram 32.” It is also authentically reported from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: “Sunan an-Nasa'i 5Sahih (Darussalam).” Therefore, there is no blame on using it in the mosque or outside the mosque. It is recommended to use it when entering the prayer before saying the takbir, at the beginning of the ablution, and when entering the home. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said when asked: “” meaning: When he (peace and blessings be upon him) entered his home.
So the miswak is among the prescribed recommended practices, and it contains what is known of improving the breath, cleaning the teeth, and encouraging good. However, it is not used during the time of the sermon. During the time of the sermon, the believer should be listening, leaving off movement, not fiddling with anything, and not using the miswak. Rather, he listens to the preacher, benefits from the sermon, reflects, and understands. As for before the sermon, there is nothing wrong with it. Before the prayer, there is nothing wrong with it. While sitting in the mosque, there is nothing wrong with it. At the time of prayer, it is prescribed. At the time of ablution, it is prescribed. Yes.
