The Ruling on the Ring and Thread Used to Ward Off Illness

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The question: The first message received by the program was from the listener Abd al-Fattah Ahmad Muhammad Atiya, of Egyptian nationality, residing in al-Qassim in al-Fawarah. He says in his message: From 'Imran ibn Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him):
That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a man with a ring of brass on his hand, and he said: What is this? He said: It is for al-Wahinah. He said: Remove it, for it does not increase you anything but weakness. If you were to die with it on you, you would never succeed.
Also: I have heard that wearing a ring, a thread, or the like to lift a calamity or ward it off is a form of shirk (associating partners with Allah). What is the meaning of: the ring, the thread, and al-wahn (weakness)? And what is shirk? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good?
The answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and the final outcome belongs to the righteous. And may prayers and peace be upon His servant and messenger, His choice from among His creation, and His trustee over His revelation, our Prophet, our Imam, and our Master Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and whoever follows his path and is guided by his guidance until the Day of Judgment.
As for what follows:
This is the hadith mentioned by the questioner: it is the hadith of 'Imran ibn Husayn ibn 'Ubayd al-Khuzai (may Allah be pleased with him) from his father, narrated by the Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal in the Musnad with a good chain of narration, and narrated by others:
That a man had a ring on his hand which he had hung for al-Wahinah.
The people of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance (jahiliyyah) would hang this ring, claiming that it was beneficial for this disease:
So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said—when he saw it on this man, and in a narration: that he saw it on 'Imran himself—: Remove it, for it does not increase you anything but weakness. If you were to die with it on you, you would never succeed.
.
His saying:
Remove it.
means: remove it. And his saying:
for it will only increase you in weakness.
Sunan Ibn Majah 3531Da’if (Darussalam)
If you were to die with it on you, you would never succeed.
And that is only because it is a type of amulet (tamimah) hung by the ignorant, and it is a type of shirk (associating partners with Allah); because it attaches hearts to other than Allah, and turns them away from Allah. Therefore, the Lawgiver rejected it and prohibited it. In this matter, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever hangs a tamimah, Allah will not complete for him, and whoever hangs a wada'ah, Allah will not grant him peace.
:
And whoever hangs up a tamimah (amulet) has committed shirk (associating partners with Allah).
.
And amulets (tamimat) are what is hung on children and on the sick, such as charms, talismans, bones, or other things hung by the ignorant, who claim that they cure the sick, and that they protect them from jinn or from the evil eye. All of this is invalid (batil) and not permissible to do, and it is minor shirk (shirk asghar). And that is only because it attaches hearts to other than Allah, and makes them turn away from and be heedless of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). It is obligatory to attach hearts to Allah alone, and to hope for healing from Him and to ask Him and supplicate to Him for seeking healing; because He is the Owner of all things, and He is the Benefactor and the Harmer, and He is the one in whose hand is healing . Therefore, Allah (Mighty and Majestic) legislated leaving these hangings and legislated prohibiting them, so that hearts may gather upon Allah, and upon sincerity to Him, and reliance upon Him, and asking Him for healing, Blessed and Exalted is He, other than anything else. So it is not permissible for a Muslim to hang a ring of iron, or of brass, or of gold, or of anything else, for the purpose of healing, or bones on the hand or the like. And of this are the new bracelets used by some people, the metallic ones; they are of the same kind as this; they must be prevented.
Some people say: that it prevents rheumatism, and this is something with no basis. Rather, they must be prevented, like the ring that 'Imran hung. And likewise what is hung of bones, or wolf hair, or charms, or talismans, and unknown things. All of this must be prevented, and all of it falls under the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever hangs a tamimah, Allah will not complete for him, and whoever hangs a wada'ah, Allah will not grant him peace.
And when Hudhayfah entered upon a sick man and found that he had hung a thread, he said: ما هذا؟ He said: It is from the fever. So he cut it and recited the words of Allah the Exalted: “And most of them do not believe in Allah except while they are associating partners with Allah” [Surat Yusuf: 106]..
So it is not permissible for a Muslim to hang threads or rings, or amulets, or anything else. Rather, he must stay away from these matters that were customary in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance (jahiliyyah), and adhere to the command of Islam, which contains guidance and light, and in it is rectitude and reform, and in it is the good outcome. And Allah is the Guarantor of success.
The presenter: Also, in his question, he asks about the meaning of shirk?
The Shaykh: Shirk (associating partners with Allah) is of two types: major and minor. So the shirk that occurs due to hanging an amulet and a ring is minor shirk (shirk asghar); because it diverts hearts to other than Allah, and attaches them to other than Allah, so it becomes a type of shirk from this perspective. And it is one of the causes of heedlessness regarding Allah and the imperfection of reliance upon Him . And this became a type of shirk. Therefore, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever hangs up an amulet has committed shirk.
meaning: he has diverted a branch of his heart to other than Allah. And it is obligatory to make worship sincere for Allah alone and to attach oneself to Him, Blessed and Exalted is He. And it is obligatory to rely upon Him also, Exalted and Majestic is He, and that your heart be attached to Allah, hoping for His mercy and fearing His punishment, and asking Him from His bounty and hoping for healing from Him .
As for ordinary permissible medicines, there is no harm in them. Medicine by something eaten or drunk, or something permissible from pills, or injections, or bandages, or ........... all of this is fine.
As for hanging amulets, which are things written on papers or scraps, or hanging pieces of iron or pieces of brass or of gold, or of silver, or the like of that, this is what is prohibited, and it is considered an amulet and considered a type of shirk.
And as for known permissible medicines, whether drinkable or edible, or a bandage, or pills that are eaten, or injections that are given, or the like of that, all of these, if it is known that they are beneficial, there is no harm in them, and they do not fall under this category. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you.
