The Ruling on Hanging Amulets and Talismans to Ward Off the Evil Eye and Illness

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This is another letter we received from al-Zulfi, from the Institute of al-Zulfi, sent by Muhammad 'Abd Allah 'Abd al-Rahman al-Thaniyan. He says in his letter: I have found that some people, when one of them is afflicted by a jinn, hang a wolf’s leg on the hand of the afflicted person. How valid is this? And what is your opinion, may Allah guide you?
Answer: Hanging a wolf’s hand, or wolf’s hair, or wolf’s bones, or anything else on the sick person, or the one suspected of being possessed by a jinn, or otherwise, this is not permissible. Rather, this is among the amulets (tamimah) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade and warned against, where he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever hangs an amulet, Allah will not complete (his success) for him, and whoever hangs a small bag, Allah will not give him peace. And whoever hangs an amulet has committed shirk (associating partners with Allah).من تعلق تميمة فلا أتم الله له، ومن تعلق ودعة فلا ودع الله له»، «ومن تعلق تميمة فقد أشرك
.
Therefore, it is not permissible to hang amulets, whether they are bones, or a small bag (wada'), or hair, or iron rings, or anything else, or of any kind. All of this is not permissible. It is not limited to the wolf; whether it is a wolf, or a lion, or a dog, or a cheetah, or anything else, all of this is not permissible. All of it is considered among the amulets that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade hanging. However, treatment is done with the Noble Qur'an, it is treated with recitation, it is treated with good, beneficial medicines. As for hanging things on children, or on the sick, hanging amulets of bones, wolf bones, or a wolf’s leg, or a wolf’s hand, or a wolf’s hoof, or some of the wolf’s hair, or the dog’s, or the pig’s, or the lion’s, or anything else, all of this is not permissible.
And likewise, what some people do by placing verses in a paper, or placing with them some supplications, or some nails, or some talismans, then putting them in leather or something else and hanging them on the child or on the sick person, all of this is not permissible.
The amulets intended to ward off illness, or to ward off jinn, or to ward off the evil eye, all of this is not permissible. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
When he saw a ring on a man’s leg, he said: Remove it, for it will not increase you except in harm. If you were to die with it on you, you would never succeed.لما رأى على رجل حلقة قال: انزعها فإنها لا تزيدك إلا وهناً، فإنك لو مت وهي عليك ما أفلحت أبداً
, and he said:
spells, charms and love-potions are polytheismإن الرقى والتمائم والتولة شرك
Sunan Abi Dawud 3883Sahih (Al-Albani)
. And the ruqyah, meaning the unknown ones or those containing deniable things, and likewise the amulets, all of them are not permissible. They are what is hung on children or on the sick to protect from the evil eye or from jinn. All of this is not permissible.
And likewise, al-tawilah: which is the turning away and the turning back (of affection), and it is what some women do to make husbands love their wives, or to make a woman love her husband. All of this is not permissible, and it is among sorcery. All of these are forbidden. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) warned about them. The permissible ruqyah is the lawful ruqyah with the Qur'an, with good supplications, and with what came in the hadiths. These are good ruqyah. The sick person is treated with them, and supplication is made for him, and he is blown upon, and supplication is made for him. It is good. As for hanging something on him, this is not permissible. Yes.
