Letting the garment hang below the ankles is a means to arrogance

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is your Eminence’s opinion regarding the one who was asked about letting the garment hang below the ankles, and he said: “It is arrogance”? Is this considered an interpretation, or a change of the words of the Messenger of Allah? And what is its ruling?

Answer:
Letting the garment hang below the ankles is a means to arrogance, not arrogance itself. However, generally, it is a means, and generally, it leads to arrogance. As for it being arrogance itself, no, but it is a means to arrogance and a path to it. For this reason, Islam forbade it and prohibited it; because it is a means to arrogance, and it is a means to ruining clothes, defiling them, dirtying them, and destroying them. When 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw a young man whose garment was touching the ground, he said to him: “O servant of Allah, lift up your garment; for it is more mindful of your Lord, and purer for your garment.”
