The Ruling on Dyeing White Hair with Pure Black

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is the ruling on changing white hair to pure black?

Answer:
Pure black is not permissible, but red or yellow is fine. As for changing it to pure black, it is not permissible. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Change this gray hair, and keep it away from blackغيروا هذا الشيب، وجنبوه السواد
as recorded in Sahih Muslim, when he saw the father of al-Tayyib had been struck by gray hair, and his head and beard were as white as a pigeon’s beak, he said:
Change this gray hair, and keep it away from blackغيروا هذا الشيب، وجنبوه السواد
.
In Sunan Abu Dawud, and in Musnad Ahmad with a good chain, from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he said:
At the end of time there will be people who will use this black dye like the crops of doves who will not experience the fragrance of Paradise.يكون في آخر الزمان قوم، يخضبون بالسواد كحواصل الحمام، لا يريحون رائحة الجنة
Sunan Abi Dawud 4212Sahih (Al-Albani)
a severe warning.
The point is: changing the hair to black is not permissible. But if it is mixed with black mixed with red, there is no harm, or with yellow, or with pure red, or with pure yellow; there is no harm. This is a recommended practice (sunnah). Changing gray hair is a recommended practice (sunnah), but not with black.
