The Ruling on Carrying Out the Fixed Punishment Against a Hypocrite

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Is the fixed punishment carried out against a hypocrite, or not?

Answer:
If it is established that he is a zindiq, he is offered the chance to repent; if he repents, well and good, otherwise he is killed. Some scholars hold that he is killed outright without being offered the chance to repent, if it becomes apparent that in his heart he denies and rejects the truth while outwardly professing Islam. Many scholars hold that he is killed as a disbeliever by way of the fixed punishment. Some scholars offer him the chance to repent; if he repents, stands firm upon the religion of Allah, and nothing indicating hypocrisy appears from him thereafter, there is no harm. Otherwise, he is killed.
However, the outward actions of hypocrites are called practical hypocrisy. Hypocrisy is of two kinds: doctrinal hypocrisy, which is denying Allah and His Messenger in one's heart. This is major disbelief—may Allah protect us from it—and it is about this that Allah said:
Indeed, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fireإِنَّ الْمُنَافِقِينَ فِي الدَّرْكِ الأَسْفَلِ مِنَ النَّارِ
[Al-Nisa: 145], meaning they are in the lowest depth of the disbelievers, beneath the disbelievers. May Allah protect us from it.
As for the second type of hypocrisy, practical hypocrisy, such as being lazy in prayer, or lying at times, or betraying a trust, this is practical hypocrisy—may Allah protect us from it—and it may be a means to major hypocrisy. We ask Allah for safety from it.
