Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Allah the Exalted says:
then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] oneفَانْكِحُوا مَا طَابَ لَكُمْ مِنَ النِّسَاءِ مَثْنَى وَثُلَاثَ وَرُبَاعَ فَإِنْ خِفْتُمْ أَلَّا تَعْدِلُوا فَوَاحِدَةً
[Surat al-Nisa: 3] and He says in another verse:
And you will never be able to be equal [in feeling] between wives, even if you should strive [to do so]وَلَنْ تَسْتَطِيعُوا أَنْ تَعْدِلُوا بَيْنَ النِّسَاءِ وَلَوْ حَرَصْتُمْ
[Surat al-Nisa: 129] So what is the interpretation of that?

Answer:
The answer to this has already been given, and that it is not possible for a person to fulfill the capacity of complete justice, but he is required to do what is within his capacity, what he is able to do. As for love—the love of a person in his heart—he may love one more, he may have more intercourse with one, and he may find more comfort in the speech of one, so the matter is not in his hand. This pertains to the hearts. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to divide his time between his wives and say:
O Allah, this is my division concerning what I control, so do not blame me concerning what You control and I do not.اللهم هذا قسمي فيما أملك، فلا تلمني فيما تملك، ولا أملك
Sunan Abi Dawud 2134
This is what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said. The scholars said: Its meaning is love, affection, and what arises from that. These are matters in the hand of Allah.
