Is the number in the hadiths of dhikr fixed and not to be increased?

Question:
He says: It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) , from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who said:
He who recites in the morning and in the evening (these words):" Exalted is Allah (He is free from imperfection)and all praise is due to Him" one hundred times, he would not bring on the Day of Resurrection anything excellent than this except one who utters these words or utters more than these words.
Sahih Muslim 2692
, so is the number of tasbih here not based on a specific Prophetic limit of one hundred, or what is it?

Answer:
It contains great virtue: "Subhan Allah wa bihamdih" (Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him) one hundred times in the morning and evening is among the causes of the forgiveness of sins. If one increases and recites hundreds or thousands, his reward becomes greater. However, this is with righteousness; these virtues are conditioned by performing the obligatory duties and avoiding the forbidden, as the Mighty and Majestic said:
If you avoid the major sins which you are forbidden, We will remove from you your lesser sins
[Al-Nisa: 31]. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The five [daily] prayers, Friday to Friday and Ramadan to Ramadan make atonement for what has happened since the previous one when major sins have been avoided.
Mishkat al-Masabih 564
. So the virtues are conditioned by avoiding major sins, and Allah erases the minor sins thereby.
As for the one who persists in sins, he is threatened with the Fire even if he recites tasbih, and even if he recites dhikr. He is threatened with the Fire because of his persistence in sins, as the Exalted said:
(135) And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves [by transgression], remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins - and who can forgive sins except Allah? - and [who] do not persist in what they have done while they know. (136) Those - their reward is forgiveness from their Lord and gardens beneath which rivers flow [in Paradise], wherein they will abide eternally; and excellent is the reward of the [righteous] workers.
[Al-Imran: 135, 136].
So it is obligatory for the servant to fear what Allah has forbidden, to stay away from what angers Allah, to hold fast to what Allah has made obligatory upon him, to strive to leave what Allah has forbidden him, and to adhere to repentance for what has passed. It is prescribed for him to increase in tasbih, tahlil, tahmid, and takbir; for this is among the means of forgiveness and among the means of success.
