The ruling on seeking treatment from one known for fortune-telling and sorcery

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A man fell ill and went to another man who is called a "Sayyid." He stipulated that the patient give him several heads of sheep, a quantity of grain, and a sum of money. He wrote an amulet for him and wrote several papers, some of which he erases and makes him drink, and others he burns for fumigation. He also stipulated that he give him one head of sheep every year. Please rule for us, may Allah reward you with the best reward, about this?

Answer:
This and its like are not to be resorted to, nor asked about. This is from the fortune-tellers and the wicked who consume the wealth of people unjustly. It is not permissible to ask him, ever. This is an error. Among the signs of his evil is his stipulation of heads of sheep. What does he do with the heads of sheep? He slaughters them for the jinn, or for whom? This is evil. Then, his giving of amulets to be hung is from the way of the jinn...
The intended meaning: That it is not permissible to ask him, and we hope the questioner will give us his true information. Where is this man? And in what place? And what is his name? Even if it is in secret between us and him. You, the questioner, give us his information; because it is not permissible to approve of this. His work is bad, and this harms the Muslims.

Question: What are the types of shirk (associating partners with Allah)?

Answer: This is from the fortune-tellers who claim knowledge of the unseen. And whoever claims knowledge of the unseen commits disbelief (kufr).

Question: Those who treat without stipulating anything?

Answer: This is not permissible. Hanging amulets... Amulets are shirk (associating partners with Allah).

Question: Some of them treat with folk medicine and do not stipulate anything...?

Answer: Nothing is permissible. It is never permissible to hang amulets, nor is it permissible... for the one who does it, nor is it permissible to approve of it; because they are amulets, and it has been reported that they are shirk (associating partners with Allah). He said:
Whoever hangs a talisman, Allah will not complete his affair, and whoever hangs a charm, Allah will not grant him peace.من تعلق تميمة؛ فلا أتم الله له، ومن تعلق ودعة؛ فلا ودع الله له
And whoever hangs an amulet has committed shirk (associating partners with Allah)ومن تعلق شيئًا؛ فقد أشرك
And he said:
spells, charms and love-potions are polytheismإن الرقى، والتمائم، والتولة شرك
Sunan Abi Dawud 3883Sahih (Al-Albani)
.
So it is not permissible to hang them, even if they are from the Qur'an; because they are a means to evil, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited all amulets and did not make an exception for anything. And Ibrahim al-Nakha'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The companions of Ibn Mas'ud disliked them, whether from the Qur'an or from other than the Qur'an, meaning they considered them forbidden.
Then, hanging amulets that are from the Qur'an and from other supplications is a means to opening the door to shirk (associating partners with Allah); because if one hangs this, one hangs that, and the matter becomes confused.
