Books of Sorcery

Fatwa No. ( 16705 )
Q: The questioner says: His father believes in some of the pre-Islamic beliefs called sorcery , including drawing in the sand, which they study in a book called (The Science of the Principles of Sand), and other things they call "burying the earth," as well as believing in amulets and talismans obtained from books known as the Yellow Books. Among these books are (The Great Sun of Knowledge), (The Book of Medicine and Mercy), (The Book of Numerology), (The Great Book of the Subtleties of the Virtuous), (The Sorcery of the Fortune-Tellers), and other strange books. Some of these are in his father's possession, and he constantly reads them, deriving from them talismans, incantations, ciphers, and other things. Among their practices is what is called "exercise," meaning spiritual fasting, as they call it, in which they abstain from eating anything that has a soul. Among their practices is also what is called "the mandel," which is essentially seeking knowledge of the unseen, palm reading, summoning jinn... and so on. He asks about the ruling on their practices and eating their sacrifices... and so on.
A : The books mentioned in the question are books of misguidance, and they contain a great deal of shirk (associating partners with Allah), fortune-telling, and the spread of sorcery and misguidance.
They are books that are not permissible to possess, sell, or circulate. Many people have gone astray because of them, so to Allah we belong and to Him we return. As for the situation of the person mentioned in the question, his reading of the aforementioned books, and his practice of fortune-telling, he is a wretched person who is wronging himself. He has taken the path of error, shirk, and far-reaching misguidance. These practices you mentioned about him are the deeds of fortune-tellers and deceptions. No Muslim would approve of them for himself or for anyone else. They indicate great ignorance and a lack of insight into the religion of Allah the Exalted. So you must advise him and show him the truth, following the guidance of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), and dealing with him in the best manner. If he desists and repents, praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. If he persists, it is obligatory for you to cut off ties with him and boycott him for the sake of Allah until he repents. However, if the one doing this is your father, you must inform him of what we have mentioned and advise him for the sake of Allah with a good manner and kind words, so that perhaps Allah will guide him through you. It is not permissible for you to cut off ties with him; rather, you must continue to advise him, pray for his guidance, and accompany him with kindness until Allah guides him or death separates you two; for Allah the Exalted and Majestic said:
(14) And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination. (15) But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness and follow the way of those who turn back to Me [in repentance]. Then to Me will be your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do.
[Luqman 31:14-15]
.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
