The Response to Those Who Spread Doubts Regarding the Kissing of the Black Stone
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
There is a doubt that says: Since Islam forbade the worship of stones, why was the kissing of the Black Stone prescribed? And how do we respond to this doubt?
Answer:
This is an exception. Allah makes exceptions for whatever He wills. It is not for us to object to Allah. Allah has prescribed for us to kiss the Black Stone, to touch it, and to touch the Yemeni Corner. He has forbidden us from seeking blessing from trees and stones. This is an exception. We do it in obedience to Allah and following the example of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).
Why do we circumambulate seven times, but we do not circumambulate graves, or the house of so-and-so, or the house of so-and-so? Because Allah has prescribed this for us, and we are commanded servants. We must do what Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) has prescribed. Follow, and do not innovate. We must fear Him and follow what Allah has prescribed for us in words and deeds. If He commanded us to worship Muhammad, or to worship al-Siddiq, or 'Umar, we would worship them. This is a prescription from Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He). He is the One who commands us.
Allah says: [Al-A'raf: 3] And He says: [Al-Hajj: 29] So He commanded us to circumambulate the Ancient House. So the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) circumambulated, touched the Stone, and kissed it, and touched the Yemeni Corner. For this reason, when 'Umar kissed it, he said: "I know that you are a stone, you do no harm and do no benefit, and were it not that I saw the Prophet kissing you, I would not have kissed you." He kissed it following the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and emulating him (peace and blessings be upon him).
Likewise, all the prayers we perform—four rak'ahs, and when we do not pray five, the Zuhr, 'Asr, and 'Isha' are three, and the Fajr is two—if we add to this, we become innovators. If we prayed the Fajr four times, and the Maghrib four times, if we prayed the Zuhr two times, and the 'Asr two times; we would become innovators. We must only follow, and not innovate. We must remain steadfast upon the Shari'ah, and not add to it, as Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) said: [al-Jathiyah:18] This, my brothers, is a matter of divine legislation from Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); it is not for us to add, nor to subtract.

Allah says:
Follow, [O mankind], what has been revealed to you from your Lord
اتَّبِعُوا مَا أُنْزِلَ إِلَيْكُمْ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْThen let them end their untidiness and fulfill their vows and perform Tawaf around the ancient House."
ثُمَّ لْيَقْضُوا تَفَثَهُمْ وَلْيُوفُوا نُذُورَهُمْ وَلْيَطَّوَّفُوا بِالْبَيْتِ الْعَتِيقِLikewise, all the prayers we perform—four rak'ahs, and when we do not pray five, the Zuhr, 'Asr, and 'Isha' are three, and the Fajr is two—if we add to this, we become innovators. Then We put you, [O Muhammad], on an ordained way concerning the matter [of religion]; so follow it
ثُمَّ جَعَلْنَاكَ عَلَى شَرِيعَةٍ مِنَ الْأَمْرِ فَاتَّبِعْهَا
