Warning against two serious afflictions prevalent among Islamic youth: the first is self-admiration, and the second

The Shaykh : Among the regrettable phenomena observed in many young people are two afflictions. The first is self-admiration and arrogance, or being deluded by what one may have been granted of knowledge, whereby one becomes deluded by it, boasts, and takes pride over the other Muslims, forgetting that the knowledge by which Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has favored him should be a means to reform himself. I do not say his creed, because we are speaking of those whom Allah has blessed with beneficial knowledge, so it remains for them to combine this beneficial knowledge with righteous action. The second apparent affliction in some young people is that they do not observe many of the etiquettes specified by the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). I am not now in a position to remind them of many or some of these etiquettes, but I want to remind them of a hadith containing some of these etiquettes that every student of knowledge must embody. I mean by this his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1919Hasan (Darussalam). I say, with great regret, that many students of knowledge do not observe etiquette. I say, with great regret, that many students of knowledge do not observe the etiquette of this authentic hadith: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1919Hasan (Darussalam). We find, for example, that some students of knowledge do not respect those who are older than them in age and greater than them in knowledge. This is said frankly: this hadith exists, and you find their tongues long in pretending to criticize those who are older and more knowledgeable than them. This is delusion in oneself and forgetting the practice of this noble Prophetic etiquette. The discussion on this is long and very long, so I conclude by reminding you of something like His saying (Blessed and Exalted is He): [At-Tawbah 9:105]. This is what I was able to deliver on the occasion of ... .
The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
The Shaykh : And you...
He is not one of us who does not have mercy on our young and does not respect our elders.
ليس منَّا مَن لم يرحم صغيرنا ، ويوقِّر كبيرنا ، ويعرف لعالمنا حقَّهHe is not one of us who does not have mercy on our young and does not respect our elders.
ليس منَّا مَن لم يرحم صغيرنا ، ويوقِّر كبيرنا ، ويعرف لعالمنا حقَّهAnd say, "Do [as you will], for Allah will see your deeds, and [so, will] His Messenger and the believers. And you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, and He will inform you of what you used to do."
The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
The Shaykh : And you...
