Explaining the integrity of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), and refuting those who claim otherwise.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The student : And I also, my Shaykh, here I hope that you will comment on this statement, namely that the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), even those who were accused, do not fall outside this assertion, which is that the Companions are all trustworthy, without distinguishing between one and another, despite the differences among them in degrees of reliability.

The Shaykh : I have no further words on this subject beyond what the scholars of the Muslims, all of them, have stated: that the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) are the first generation, as I mentioned earlier, whom Allah (Mighty and Majestic) employed to transmit this Islam to those who came after them, to the Muslims, until the Hour occurs. And if Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has guaranteed, as previously explained, the preservation of the Shari'ah, both the Book and the Sunnah, when He said:
Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian. إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ
[Al-Hijr 15:9]
, the scholars of hadith, from this very verse, which these later people lack the jurisprudence to help them deduce what the verse indicates regarding the connection of a command with something else, the connection of the explicit with the implicit, I want to say that His saying (Glorified and Exalted is He):
And indeed, we will be his guardians. وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ
[Yusuf 12:12]
, this is undoubtedly first and foremost intended to refer to the Noble Qur'an, and there is no disagreement on this point.
Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian. إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ
[Al-Hijr 15:9]
We say to these people: Does it not follow from Allah's (Mighty and Majestic) guarantee to preserve the Qur'an from any alteration or change, addition or subtraction, that He would employ people to realize this promise, people who transmit the Qur'an from the mouth of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) as they heard it, fresh and new, without addition or subtraction? The answer is yes; it is necessary that His saying (Glorified and Exalted is He):
And indeed, we will be his guardians. وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ
[Yusuf 12:12]
implies that the transmitters of this Qur'an must be trustworthy, preservers, controlled, and knowledgeable... If they discuss this and contradict themselves, revealing their ugly faces, which are a blight... on Islam, by casting doubt on the Sunnah and, through casting doubt on the narrators of the Sunnah, the matter leads to casting doubt on those who transmitted the Qur'an, because those who transmitted the Qur'an are the same ones who transmitted the hadiths of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), namely the explanation, as mentioned in the previous discussion. Therefore, whoever casts doubt on some of the Companions is opening a door of doubt for all the Companions, who are the transmitters of the Qur'an. In any case, I said earlier that this is just noise; we see in it only that "it is possible to do this" and "it is possible to do that." We can demolish all these words without this word or the one following it or any other. Rather, bring your proof if you are truthful. You say "it is possible" and "it is possible," but what have you done in this regard? For example, have you established a method or a rule for distinguishing a Companion from a Successor? They will never be able to do that except by returning to the scholars of hadith. Can you know a Successor from a Successor of a Successor? Absolutely nothing of that sort. So how can they say "this is a trustworthy, mature, sane person," "this is a trustworthy person," "this is a firm, trustworthy person"? They cannot reach that conclusion no matter what scientific means they are given, because these scientific means require scientific and legal culture. Therefore, I see, and I do not know if there are other questions, that this extent is sufficient, if Allah wills.
