What is the meaning of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): (except that Allah helped me against it, so I was safe)?

The questioner : The summary states: Shaykh al-Lahidan, at the end of the saying of the Prophet - (peace and blessings be upon him):
but Allah helps me against him and so I am safe from his hand إلَّا أنَّ الله أعانني عليه فأسلم
Sahih Muslim 2814a
, says: "The scholars differed: does 'so I was safe' mean I was safe from him, or that he was safe? Which is the stronger position, if you please?"

The Shaykh : There is no stronger position, there is no stronger position; they are two narrations, and Allah knows best which of them is more correct. If both are authentic, which is unlikely, then it includes both meanings: he was safe, so I was safe from his evil, or 'so I was safe' means he was not safe, but Allah protects me from his evil. So there is nothing definitive on the matter.
