What is the ruling on the use of the IUD for women?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : The use of contraception for the woman, which is this piece that is taken from the woman's private parts... is it in it?

The Shaykh : The IUD.

The questioner : The IUD, yes, what is the ruling on this IUD?

The Shaykh : Naturally, its insertion requires exposing the woman's 'awrah (part of the body that must be covered).

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : And this is haram (forbidden), and the haram is not permissible to commit except out of dire necessity, and dire necessity is measured by its extent. So if there is a dire necessity and it is measured by its extent, it is permissible; otherwise, it is not.

The questioner : Well, Shaykh, can we define the dire necessity in this case?

The Shaykh : No, it is not possible, because this issue differs from person to person, or from one woman to another. Therefore, every case has its own answer, and it is not permissible to give a general rule in such cases. This question is similar to if we did not mention His saying - the Exalted - :
excepting that to which you are compelled إِلَّا مَا اضْطُرِرْتُمْ إِلَيْهِ
[Al-An'am 6:119]
Is it possible to define the dire necessity for every person who is compelled to eat carrion, blood, or what is forbidden? Of course, it is not possible. The issue differs. For example, a person who is strong in build and strong in resolve can abstain from food and drink, not just for hours, but perhaps for days. Another person might be frail, sick, weak, and exhausted, unable to abstain even for hours, always wanting to eat or drink. And between these two is what no one knows except Allah - Mighty and Majestic. Therefore, it is not correct to establish a general rule regarding dire necessity, whether in eating or drinking what is forbidden, or in committing what is forbidden. And here comes His saying - the Exalted - :
(14) Rather, man, against himself, will be a witness, (15) Even if he presents his excuses. بَلِ الْإِنْسَانُ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ بَصِيرَةٌ * وَلَوْ أَلْقَى مَعَاذِيرَهُ
[Al-Qiyamah 75:14-15]
