Question:
What are the characteristics that must be present in the 'aqiqah? And is it permissible to divide it into three parts like the 'udhiyah?

Answer:
Answer: The rulings of the 'aqiqah are exactly like the rulings of the 'udhiyah. The recommended age is that the sheep be six months old, and that the goat be one year old if the 'aqiqah is performed with sheep. If it is performed with cattle, it must be at least two years old. If it is performed with a camel, it must be five years old, a thani (two-year-old). A jadh' (one-year-old) sheep or a thani of any other animal. And it must be free from defects such as blindness, lameness, illness, old age, and decrepitude. As for its meat, the recommended practice is to divide it into three parts: one part for him and his household, one part to be given in charity, and one part to be sent to his close friends and relatives.
