Question:
In the exegesis of the saying of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He): (O you who believe! Protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are angels, harsh and severe, who do not disobey Allah in what He commands them but do what they are commanded).

Answer:
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) calls out to them, honoring them and alerting them, honoring them with the description of faith, which He bestowed upon them, and alerting them to what is obligatory upon them. He says (Exalted and Majestic is He): (O you who believe! Protect yourselves), meaning, take precautions that protect you from this Fire. (Protect yourselves and your families), so a person should not limit himself to protecting only himself, but he must protect his family by obliging himself to obey Allah, doing His commands, and leaving His prohibitions, and by obliging his family and those in his home to do the same. He commands them to fear Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in order to preserve His commands by performing them, and His prohibitions by leaving them. This is the protection that saves one from the punishment of Allah; no fortresses protect from it, no clothes protect from it, and nothing protects from it except righteous deeds and the fear of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). His saying: (Protect yourselves and your families) indicates that a person is accountable for his family, who are with him in his home, and that he must oblige them to obey and keep his home free of trials and their causes, as well as the degrading programs and devices that bring them, until his home is clean. He should enliven his home with the remembrance of Allah and obedience to Allah. The house in which Allah is remembered and the house in which He is not remembered are like the living and the dead, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said. (Protect yourselves and your families): from your wives, your children, and everyone who lives with you, for you are obligated to lead them to the obedience of Allah and restrain them from the sins of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and to ensure that this house does not become a center of corruption and a gathering place for evils that these bad programs penetrate. This is a responsibility for the people of the houses who have authority over them. It is a great responsibility that they are accountable for this house, by preserving them through the obedience of Allah and leaving the disobedience of Allah, because they are their subjects, as he said: “Every one of you is a shepherd, and every one of you is responsible for his flock. The man is a shepherd over the people of his house, and he is responsible for them. The woman is a shepherd over the house of her husband and her children, and she is responsible for them.” The Muslim must be aware of this matter, that he is accountable for himself, and he is accountable for those under his hand and in his authority. Then, he is generally accountable for enjoining good and forbidding evil regarding his neighbors and his brothers. This is the responsibility of the Muslim in this life. May Allah guide everyone to what He loves and is pleased with, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad.
