Question:
We begin with the exegesis of this blessed verse in Surat al-Nisa, in the saying of the Truth—Blessed and Exalted is He—I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan: “There is no good in much of their private talk, except for one who orders charity, or what is right, or making peace between people. And whoever does that seeking the pleasure of Allah, We will give him a great reward.”
Answer:
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. His saying, the Exalted: “There is no good in much of their private talk.” Al-najwa is the speech that takes place between people, and most of it contains no good. Most of the talk that circulates among people contains no good, except for what Allah—Exalted and Majestic is He—has excluded from these matters: “except for one who orders charity.” This means encouraging charity and benevolence and inciting people to it; there is good in this. And whoever directs people to good has a reward like that of the doer. “Except for one who orders charity, or what is right.” Al-ma'ruf is the opposite of al-munkar, so enjoining good and forbidding evil is one of the foundations of this religion and the pillar of this religion. “Except for one who orders charity, or what is right, or making peace between people.” Or making peace between people who are in dispute, quarreling, or differing; he makes peace between them. Reconciliation is good, as Allah—Exalted and Majestic is He—said. He, the Exalted, said: “And if two parties among the believers fight, then make reconciliation between them. But if one of them transgresses against the other, then fight the one that transgresses until it turns back to the command of Allah. And if it turns back, then make reconciliation between them in justice and act with equity. Indeed, Allah loves those who act with equity. The believers are but brothers, so make reconciliation between your two brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.” So reconciliation between those in dispute and those who are at odds contains great good, and it removes hatred and enmity. This is the concern of the people of good, who strive for reconciliation. Then He, Exalted and Majestic is He, said: “And whoever does that”—meaning any of these matters—“We will give him a great reward.” Allah—Exalted and Majestic is He—promised him that He will give him a great reward for this, the magnitude of which no one knows except Allah—Glorified and Exalted is He. So He, Glorified and Exalted is He, guaranteed the reward for whoever orders charity, or what is right, or making peace between people.
