Question:
What is intercession? When does the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) intercede for his Ummah, and is intercession for the entire Ummah? And how?

Answer:
Answer: Intercession is mediation between the one seeking a right and the one from whom it is sought. Intercession occurs between people, some with others, and it occurs between Allah and His creation. As for intercession between people, it is a prescribed act. Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said: {Whoever intercedes with a good intercession will have a share of it, and whoever intercedes with a bad intercession will have a share of it}. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Intercede and you will be rewarded. This is regarding the rights of people. As for the rights of Allah and the fixed punishments, intercession is not permissible for one against whom a right has been established; intercession to drop the fixed punishment is not permissible. This is a matter that Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) has forbidden, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Avoid the fixed punishments among yourselves, but when the fixed punishments reach the ruler, then Allah has cursed the intercessor and the one for whom intercession is made.
