What is the meaning of intercession?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : What is the meaning of intercession?

The Shaykh : The scholars say regarding intercession: it is mediating on behalf of another to bring about a benefit or ward off a harm. This is intercession, the mediation, the middle ground, where one intercedes for another to bring about a benefit or ward off a harm.
So the intercession of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for the people of Paradise so that they may enter Paradise is intercession to bring about a benefit, and his intercession for the people of the standing place so that judgment is passed between them, and for the people of the Fire so that those who do not deserve eternal abode are brought out of it, is intercession to ward off a harm.
