Sincere repentance expiates sins.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is your opinion regarding major sins that are expiated by sincere repentance? We want to explain this to the brothers. There is sincere repentance for major sins, but sincere repentance does not expiate them, such as consuming people's wealth unjustly, and undutifulness to parents. And regarding major sins such as shaving the beard, smoking, and praying at home, what is their expiation if they quit smoking, let their beards grow, and pray in the mosques? What is the expiation for these sins?

Answer:
Answer: This distinction is from you; it has no basis. Sins are divided into major and minor. The criterion for major sins is that a fixed punishment is prescribed for them in this world, or a warning in the Hereafter, or they are concluded with a curse, anger, or the Fire. As for minor sins: they are what is forbidden, for which no warning is prescribed. The prohibition makes them forbidden (haram), but no warning is prescribed for them. All sins, whether major or minor, and shirk (associating partners with Allah) and what is below it, are all expiated by sincere, pure repentance that contains no falsehood, but is pure repentance, with the intention for Allah. This expiates all sins. (Say: "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful. And return to your Lord and submit to Him.") {And return} means repent. So repentance expiates major and minor sins, and shirk (associating partners with Allah) and what is below it is expiated by sincere repentance.
