Ruling on Giving Zakah to a Needy Sister
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q187: The questioner says: I am an engineer residing in Jeddah. I ask about giving charity to a sister as long as she is in need?
A187: If the sister is in need of financial maintenance, and there is no heir between you and her who would block inheritance—meaning, if she died, you would inherit from her—then you must provide for her from your own wealth and not give her from your zakah; because her maintenance is an obligation upon you. You provide for her from your wealth and do not give her from the zakah. However, if she is blocked from inheriting from you, or if you are blocked from inheriting from her and you do not inherit from her, then you may give her the zakah.
