The onset of the time for breaking the fast in the presence of negligence

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 17313 )
Q: The mu'adhdhin called the adhan for the Maghrib prayer at 5:37, and the cannon was fired at the same time. The mu'adhins followed one another, and the people broke their fasts. These mu'adhins believed, based on their assumption, that the time had entered and the sun had set, because the weather was cloudy. It is known that the official time, as indicated in the calendar and approved by the Astronomy Department at King Saud University , is 5:45. At that time, the cannon was fired again, and the remaining mu'adhins called the adhan, and some others broke their fasts with them. Now, O honorable Shaykh, the people are in a difficult situation. Some say: "You must make up the fasts because of the negligence, since there was a clock." Others say: "You do not have to make up the fasts; the sin and the obligation to make up the fasts lie with the one who caused it." Therefore, we ask you to kindly rule on this issue urgently so that the difficulty is resolved. May Allah guide you and keep your steps steady.
A: If the situation is as described, then they must make up the fasts because they broke their fasts before
the time for breaking the fast had entered, given that there was negligence on their part. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
