Rinsing the mouth while fasting
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 16687 )
Q: One of the nights of Ramadan, I woke up to eat the pre-dawn meal. After finishing, I drank a sweet-tasting beverage. Then I realized that the time for Fajr had not yet arrived, so I said, "I will wait a little and then go to the mosque to pray." In the mosque, before the adhan, I intended to clean my mouth to prepare for fasting. However, while waiting, I fell into a light sleep and did not wake up until after the Fajr prayer. When I woke up, I found the taste of the sweet beverage in my throat, so I spat it out and then cleaned my mouth. Is my fast for this day valid or not? If it is not valid, what should I do?
A: If food remains in the teeth or its effect is in the mouth when Fajr arrives, it falls into one of two cases: 1. If it is a small amount that cannot be expelled, it has no effect on the validity of the fast, even if it reaches the throat, because it is not possible to guard against it. 2. If it is a large amount, then if one expels it, he owes nothing and his fast is valid. If he swallows it intentionally, his fast is invalid, and this is the opinion of the majority of scholars.
Therefore, you did well in expelling the effect of the food from your mouth, and your fast is valid, if Allah wills. A Muslim should be cautious regarding his religion. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
