Advice and Guidance for the One Who Abandons Prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q328: The questioner says: I have a brother who does not pray, and he knows that abandoning prayer is forbidden. When he does pray, he prays once or twice a week. He is thirty-two years old. We ask you to direct a word to him and to those who are on his path.
A328: Allah the Exalted said:
And those who are mindful of their prayers
, and in
another verse:
And those who are constant in their prayers
, and He the Glorious and Exalted said:
Maintain with care the [obligatory] prayers and [in particular] the middle prayer and stand before Allah, devoutly obedient.
[Al-Baqarah 2:238]
. Therefore, it is obligatory to maintain the obligatory prayers at their times, in congregation, for in them is much good, both in this world and the Hereafter. As for the one who prays at times and abandons it at other times, he is not a Muslim; for if he intentionally abandons a single obligatory prayer until its time passes, he is considered a disbeliever. This is because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Between the servant and shirk (associating partners with Allah) or kufr (disbelief) is the abandonment of prayer
He (peace and blessings be upon him) also said:
The covenant that distinguishes between us and them is prayer; so whoever leaves it, he has committed Kufr.
Sunan Ibn Majah 1079Sahih (Darussalam)
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever forgets a prayer or sleeps through it, let him pray it when he remembers itمن نسي صلاة أو نام عنها، فليصلها إذا ذكرهما
Sunan ad-Darimi 2:45
Only the sleeper and the one who forgets are excused, and he makes up the prayer. As for the one who abandons it intentionally, he was not commanded to repeat it or make it up, which indicates that he starts anew and repents to Allah. Thus, intentionally abandoning prayer is a great danger for the Muslim.
