Fixing the Intention for Fasting
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 19984 )
Q: It sometimes happens in some Muslim countries that their authorities delay somewhat, on the night of uncertainty, in announcing the entry of the month of Ramadan or its absence, which may result in some people being unable to wait until a late hour of the night.
My question is: If a person is overcome by sleep and cannot wait for his country's official announcement, how should he fix his intention for fasting? Does he condition it on the entry of the month by saying, "If tomorrow is Ramadan, I will fast, and if it is not, I will not fast"? Or does he join those with an excuse and fix it if he learns of the month's entry the next day? Or what?
A: If he sleeps without knowing whether the month has entered, and does not wake up until the daytime, and the entry of the month is confirmed, then it is obligatory for him to abstain for the rest of the day and make up that day after Ramadan. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
