Q: We inform you that twenty-three years ago, we were circumcised. It was the custom in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance that a man does not fast until he is purified, and a girl does not fast until her menses come. Ramadan came during that period, and I was no less than fifteen years old. I was purified at that time, but I suffered a wound and did not fast the entire month of Ramadan. I had not fasted before that, meaning I had not fasted Ramadan before. O honorable Shaykh: Is it obligatory for me to make up what I missed, or to feed people? I inform you that I was in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance.
A: If the situation is as you described, that you reached the age of fifteen and did not fast based on the widespread pre-Islamic custom among you that a man does not fast until he is purified, and then you were purified but suffered a wound and did not fast the entire month of Ramadan, then it is obligatory for you to make up the fasting of the month of Ramadan that you left off after reaching maturity. If you do not know the exact number of days, you should base it on the preponderant probability. You are not excused by ignorance while you are in the lands of Islam. Since you delayed making up the fasts without an excuse until another Ramadan caught up with you, you must, in addition to fasting, feed one poor person for every day you delayed fasting.
The amount is approximately one and a half kilograms of the staple food of the country. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
