The third question of Fatwa No. ( 20760 )
Q3: A woman has three months of Ramadan that she did not fast because she gave birth to children during that time. Now, after 19 or 20 years have passed, she has not fasted them, and she is now remembering them. She wants to fast them, but she cannot fast due to an illness she has. Despite her inability to fast, what must she do?
A3: If this woman is ill and her recovery is expected, she should wait until she recovers from her illness, then fast the days she missed from the months of Ramadan she missed. If she delayed making up the fast without an excuse until another Ramadan arrived, she must, in addition to making up the fast, feed one poor person for each day she missed, the amount being one and a half kilograms of wheat, rice, or the like. If the delay was due to an excuse such as illness or travel, then she owes nothing except making up the fast. However, if this woman’s illness is not expected to be cured, then fasting is dropped from her, and she must feed one poor person for each day she missed, as mentioned previously. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
